Marc Jacobs/ Michael Kors fall 2018

In a post Vetements era and in a “me too “moment we have 2 of supposedly the best that New York can offer.  Once upon a time New York was a fashion capital of the world. We boasted and beat our collective chest to brag about the likes of Norell, Blass, Anne Klein, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Ralph Rucci, Geoffrey Beene, Oscar de la Renta, Bonnie Cashin, Giorgio d’Sant Angelo, Charles James, Halston, Zoran, and many many more who gave New York a cachet and a reputation for being home to some of the world’s greatest design talents as well as being a fierce competitor to the likes of Paris and Milan.

Now we may wonder if there ever really was any contemporary or young talent that proceeded the greats or were we being tricked by the emperor’s new clothes and far too much hype. What you see here is why Seventh Avenue is a fading star. One collection that is comic book proportioned to the absurd and so reliant on styling as to be laughable and the other that is so supposedly all American that, as one friend reminded me, looks as if it came straight from the selling floor of JC Penny or possibly the prototype collection for H&M back to school.

What’s to be proud of here?   Once again strip these brands of their ancillary products and the revenue they generate and you have nothing but a pile of clothes that will generate hype by unknowledgeable and paid for critics and not sell other than on markdown and end up just fodder for the likes of Marshalls and TJ Maxx.
There’s not an original thought between them!

PS…. in case you didn’t notice, one of wunderkinds distorted YSL and Montana to almost unimaginable cartoonish incarnations while the other must have thrown in the towel and went for camo, leopard, tartan, and combat boots in a last ditch effort to look trendy…. So what you get in the end is one collection that looks tricked out and the other that looks tired … nuff said
