CHANEL HAUTE COUTURE FALL 2019

First things first… let’s address the elephant in the room and that is that Virginie Viard will walk in Karl’s shadow for quite some time and every time she shows she will be compared to him! I would be of the opinion that for her solo freshman outing she has done Karl and herself proud ... and yes the brand as well.

If you extrapolate the surroundings to be a library  it might very well be the library of the Kaiser. This collection is a pared down simplified Chanel that retains its entire DNA albeit without all the “stuff” that Karl was always so fond of piling on. Yes, of course there were some clunkers but Karl was never shy about his either. Madam Viard also flexed her design muscle by offering some pieces that are freshly designed and exude a softer and more fluid Chanel. Somehow, this collection feels younger in spirit than the usual fare. Seeing it in motion shows ra more fluid almost languid mood to it rather than the Teutonic and more rigid moments that Karl was so fond of.

Yes, I love the bow shoe and even the flats work giving the collection a very relaxed sort of vibe.  You can call it Chanel 2.0 or possibly a cleaner reimagined direction for the brand. Only time will tell what the future holds.

This collection is chock a block with all the Chanelisms that we know but somehow played down and not as in your face as was the norm. Plenty of suits, Plenty of easy dresses, shoulders are in play as well as a few Pierrot styles which come off quite well. There is a minimum of surface embellishments that are often associated with couture as well as with Karl and how he saw Chanel.
