BALMAIN FALL 2019

After waiting almost all week for something to write about … other than still one more negative review... I found happiness and light at the end of the tunnel with Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain. I have always stated that I know this young man has talent that has yet to be displayed and today we got a good idea of what he does possess and is capable of.

Don’t get me wrong, this was a far from perfect show but a lot of the lesser parts were due to a lack of editing and then some just bad and silly design. No need for lampshade skirts, basic jeans except for one bow tie neck jacket that was glorious and saran wrapped clothes and lastly no need to free the nipple at such frequency. There was a  grouping of this stringy kind of fake fur that looked like it had been washed instead of dry clean only which surely could have been eliminated.

Rousteing finally moved away from solely second skin silhouettes and showed a deft hand at relaxed and almost slouchy clothes and then he added shoulder pads to strengthen the look of his tailored pieces. The gimmicky pieces were least effective especially given the strength of the balance of the collection; the black patent was a bit over used and again that’s an editing issue. There was of course that sort of strait jacket cape which is just sort of a shame as the cape looked great on some pieces. He also might have eased up on the feathers a bit

For once this show didn’t look like every other show he has done to date, he has set himself apart from his past and is exercising his design chops. The real question is will it last? It’s actually interesting to watch this young man evolve but then again to what end? I guess we wait and see and hopefully he has the smarts to now show himself off in a different light.
