chanel resort 2020

Virginie Viard has one of the most difficult jobs in the world of fashion today in that she will probably forever be compared to her predecessor … Karl Lagerfeld. Keeping that in mind, this show had to be extremely difficult given that it's shown literally on the heels of his death. The question that comes to mind, given the timing, is just how much input did the late Mr. Lagerfeld have in the designing of this collection.

With all that said, we all know there were always the Karl clunkers in every one of his shows but they were quickly forgotten once the entire collection was shown except here where there seemed to be a profuse amount of them and they will not be forgotten or dismissed so easily. Firstly I am no fan of cropped pants and less of a fan of tea length dresses which immediately casts a pall over this collection for me.

The DNA of the brand is there... well sort of... but the choice of fabrics and patterns seemed quite off from what we have been accustomed to seeing. I found the shoes rather unappealing and unflattering yet there were great handbags. I want to not be totally negative about this but it is certainly more than hard to say this was a stellar beginning to the new era of Chanel.

Lots of heavy handed looking pieces as well as too many blocky and clumsy pieces but on the other hand the “classic” Chanel jackets in bright colors were refreshing. Chanel has always been great at resort but this time around there is something missing and I am trying very hard to not to say it is missing the final touch of the late designer.

Yes, I think there is enough to buy and appeal to the dyed in the wool Chanel woman but there was nothing that one could say was amazing or fabulous or screaming buy me. Only time will tell what the evolution of the brand will be so I will just leave it there.

One last thought… Chanel has never looked cheap and in many ways this collection took on that unenviable quality!
