Meeting John Doe: The Encounter (a keyboard connection)

***Film noir is a cinematic term used primarily to describe stylish Hollywood dramas, particularly those which emphasize cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. Hollywood's classical film noir period is generally regarded as extending from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. Film noir of this era is associated with a low-key, black-and-white visual style that has roots in German Expressionist cinematography. ***

Here are stills from a proposal for an upcoming short film project that deals with the underbelly of sexual encounters in the age of social media, Grindr, Scruff and Tinder. These stories are usually told or depicted through the eyes of those who took the initiative or in lay terms… sealed the deal.

In this instance, what you will see here are the behind the scenes from the other “eyes” of the encounter; the preparation, the anticipation, the seduction and the aftermath. The images are meant to evoke and provoke a dark and erotic side of meeting someone you have never met before and probably never encounter again. It is a black and white drama played out in the tradition of film noir as it might be in the 21st century world of “hook ups.”

Jonathan Cannaux ... the MANDRAWN interview

When doing these interviews, sometimes they come about after a very first meeting and such is the case here with Jonathan Cannaux. Selecting a subject is a roll of the dice as you just never know whether or not that person will react and respond in an engaging way. Jonathan is one of those surprises that upon meeting, I was amazed to see that the photographic images don’t begin to capture the real person who was sitting beside me. He speaks with great candor and is self-effacing in the most charming of ways.

That said, and by no means is this negative, Jonathan is warm, almost boyish with incredible eyes and well ... the French accent doesn’t hurt at all. What the camera captures is the professional in him, he plays to the camera and camera captures the model/actor in him ….  He is captivatingly handsome with the requisite flawless body, million dollar smile and the perfect subject of any photograph without being just another face in the crowd.

As if that isn’t enough, you will read that he is a man of determination and great charisma with a great sense of reality. He is genuine, intelligent, endearing and well ... it all just adds to his allure plus the fact that quite simply said ... the camera loves him. It is my privilege and honor to introduce you to him and to offer you the chance to meet a credit to his craft as well as someone I can now call my friend.

Sabato Russo founder and designer Sartorial Monk

FOR THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH PLEASE CLICK ON THIS LINK  http://mandrawn.com/sabato-russo-interview-jeffrey-felner/

There is nothing quite as exhilarating and gratifying as watching the trajectory of a new brand rising from the dust! Take that scenario and add that the brand was conceived, designed and came to life under the hand of someone you call a dear friend and you have a recipe for sheer and utter excitement, anticipation and admiration. The friend is Sabato Russo and his brand is Sartorial Monk; what started as solely a men’s collection has morphed into womenswear as well and now the path has been set and the journey has begun. With barely more than a year of history, Sartorial Monk is now available on an international stage with endless growth potential.

Signor Russo has a message from his heart and soul with each collection but he has a fashion message as well which cannot be confused with what would be considered trendy. He offers collections that are unique and classic in their own way but aimed at those who march to the beat of a different drum when it comes to how they present themselves. These acolytes are not of the sheep variety, they do not follow... they lead! In life we make a choice just as in fashion... we are part of the flock or we take a stand and stand apart from the pack... Sartorial Monk is for those who wish to stand out albeit without a spotlight shining on them. Please take note that by standing out, I mean to say not in a fashion freakish trendoid way but in a way that people take notice of you without being a subject of derision.

Enough from me and now you can “hear” what the designer has to say and then have a look at how he says it ……

Jeffrey Felner: Can you give us a brief history of your career?
Sabato Russo: I was born and raised in the town of Foggia in the south of Italy, the Puglia region to be exact.  After high school I left home to continue my education at which point I  moved to Florence and Milan to attend university for architecture. It was in Milan that I met several fashion designers and started a new career as a fashion model. I walked the runways in Paris, Milan, New York and Tokyo and suddenly the world opened up and offered me exposure to what I never experienced.  Japan was most fascinating for me with its history, culture and sensibility which completely captured me while realizing that fashion was and is my passion. While on this life journey I started a new chapter of my life by accepting a position as an assistant designer with Issey Miyake.  All was clear to me, fashion designing was my passion and with my newly formed family I moved to New York from Paris where my next career was born; it was there that I formed very prestigious relationships under my new eponymous brand. My retail and professional partners included local and international companies such as Barneys, Kashiyama, Gianfranco Ferre, Fendi and more. Today my career and life include shuttling between Milan, Paris, NYC and Puglia while concentrating on my new project/brand ….  "Sartorial Monk" which is all made in Italy for both men and women...

JF: What is your inspiration when it comes to design? The brand name? Your sartorial message?
SR: The brand name is Sartorial Monk is an esthetic… a sophistication; my soul, my emotions run deeper and deeper. Sartorial Monk is the convergence of southern Italian sartorial traditions combined with Far Eastern purism and fluidity. Sartorial Monk is the soulful imprint of masculine/feminine elegance; the freedom of deconstructed shoulders over voluminous pants, archetypal fabrics for avant-garde shapes, and perfection without restrictions.
The collection is composed of the most luxurious Italian fabrics and combined with the sartorial southern Italian mindset of how to create a visual and emotional journey through my designs. Whether day or night, black or white, joy or pain, these are the weights utilized on my personal scale when balancing and transforming the negative into positive. Minimalism and sensuality marry in order to transform an emotion into a garment.  Sartorial Monk is the unique reimagining of the classics.

“Know then that the body is merely a garment. Go seek the wearer, not the cloak.”

JF: Could you speak a little about how you see fashion at the moment and what would you like to see change?
SR: Fashion for me is the conveyance and translation of my emotions into a life style that sits outside the schemes and routines of the fashion business. It is a journey into myself, the more I transform the more I perceive beauty from inside out. The important thing is how I perceive the outside world and not only from an esthetic point of view.

What comes to mind is that if you can dream it then you can make it happen and indeed she had an idea which marinated in her head and then she took the giant step toward realizing the dream. She is a young woman on the move with steely points of view and an even stronger will that enables her to achieve on all levels. With some luck and her continuing determination, she might just become a power house within the world of men’s fashion.

It was my pleasure to ask her a few questions which will provide insights into how that  brain of hers works and how she came to be who and what she is today… so here goes… in her own words…  Frida speaks…..

Jeffrey Felner: Would you tell us a bit about you and how MANDRAWN was born?

Frida Balla: MANDRAWN debuted two weeks ago. It's a new men's magazine, available with two covers. The best words to describe it would be: young and classy. Young … because it welcomes change and innovation, without entirely adopting the alternative or avant garde line. Classy, because it prefers traditional and wearable forms and shapes, spiced up with playful components.

The debut of the magazine was an old dream come true. Three years ago I was still unsure about the profile of the publication. Then the idea came to me and I when I switched entirely to men's fashion. As a men's stylist I became more and more confident about my goals and preferences and I was always thinking about ways to materialize this conception. This is how MANDRAWN was born. The process itself was spontaneous; I could hardly describe it as a completely conscious, organized procedure but rather as a succession of separate episodes spanning seven months to complete the vision.

JF:Who are your style icons or mentors and why?

FB:This is a very good question. All in all I think that there's no such a person as I couldn't pick out a single one. My parents are extremely important for me, they raised me "free-range" and they believe in me. I find inspiration in those people who can surprise and shock me, or have some ideas that are simultaneously sophisticated and stimulating. The hardest thing is to create something that is refined in all aspects.

JF:If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would they be and why?

FB:If I could do it, the first man with whom I would like to sit at a table, would be the French naturalist writer, Emile Zola. He was a brilliant writer, his descriptions of people and places are so meticulous and accurate that the reader is overwhelmed by the genuine atmosphere of his books. His books are the finest literary adventures for me.

The second person is a totally different character and maybe it's not a surprise that I would like to dine with none other than Madonna. She's full of power, a leading figure, a person who isn't bothered by others opinion. This is the best one can do and I strive to live by this rule as well. We would have some common topics, I suppose.

The third person is Alexander McQueen. In this case the best way to spend some time with him would be the possibility to observe him while working. I am fascinated by his collections, and curious about his ethics, methods and viewpoints.

The fourth person would be my grandfather; he died before I was born. According to my family members, he had a strong personality and he was full of vitality and optimism. My grandmother often mentions that I'm just like him. I wish I could have met him.

The fifth would be Marina Abramovic. There are persons who have deep feelings combined with deep knowledge. I think Marina is such a person, who could to teach me for years on. It's in her character. There are some things you can't learn and others that you're born with.

JF:Currently, who are your favorite designers and photographers and why?

FB:The Versace man is my favourite; I like how Donatella reflects upon masculine beauty. If it’s men’s fashion then make it masculine and sexy. I always find something appealing in her collections.

The name of the photographer is well-known in Hungary, and I think that his talent will help him to achieve broader recognition. That is, Maté Gregus and he is my preferred photographer; he’s a member of my team and a good friend. I'm working with him on my styling projects as well because; our preferences are very similar concerning models, collections, locations, etc. In fact, the collaboration between us has helped me to realize that men's fashion and styling is my field

JF: If you could choose any collaboration, who or what would it be and why?

FB:As I mentioned above I love Marina Abramovic. Performance art is very actual. I can imagine a fashion show combined with one of her performances, under the name MANDRAWN x Marina Abramovic. :)  …. A performance that reviews the possible connections between her themes and men's fashion.
