meet David Gomez Pearlberg and his brand...MIXNYC

While so many are searching Instagram for their likes and popularity or posting selfies of their faces and bodies, I have opted to use it as a tool for finding new brands and creatives that span from designers to models to fine artists or just those that I consider to be simply beautiful people.

Today it’s about a brand and its founder who comes into a highly competitive niche market of menswear that includes underwear and leisure wear. What I found most intriguing is that David has developed a signature print (with the help of Claudio Braz) for his brand that of course is exclusive to his brand. What struck me also was the fact where most brands within this genre opt for is their brand name on a waist band rather than as an all over logo print which is a rarity .......... this is what I refer to as smart marketing and a key to brand recognition without billboard type merchandising. Think Gucci and Louis Vuitton... logo recognition!

And so, this is why I tip my hat to David and his colleagues for this inaugural collection that is unquestionably not to be confused with any others within this ever-growing area of apparel, so here in his own words is Daniel....

Jeffrey Felner: Can you tell the unfamiliar among us about your brand and what you bring to the table when it comes to the business of menswear?

David Gomez Pearlberg: First & foremost, I strive to create and find beauty in everything I’m involved with. I’m an entrepreneur in the world of business and real estate but I’ve always needed to nurture and feed my creative side as well. So, over the years I’ve designed both fine jewelry, which sold successfully for many years at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Takashimaya NY in addition to men’s luxury bespoke leather outerwear.

As menswear trends shifted, I saw the need for more small-batch, limited edition, casual clothing collection with a unique, chic edge and so MIX NYC was born. Collaborating with my good friend, Claudio Braz, a textile designer, we are exclusively creating fresh, young and timeless prints that stand out from the crowd and offer the wearer something new and special.  We placed an emphasis on quality and a dedication to Made In New York as we are looking to offer our customers exciting Beach/ Pool wear, Streetwear and Underwear that they can feel special in.

JF: If you could invite any 5 people to dinner, who would they be and why?

DGP: Julia Childs because she was a blast and so knowledgeable and passionate about food! Barack Obama for a million reasons but mainly because I admire his ability to communicate and his brilliance. Lady Gaga because she’s a mega star who is so down to earth, genuine and real. She impresses me every time I see her act or sing or interviewed. Lil Nas X because he does his own thing and charts new waters without fear. He brings a whole new perspective to life in America. Jean Paul Gaultier simply because he’s the most talented, original and innovative designer, whom I’ve followed and loved for a long time!

JF: If you could choose any collaboration or endorsement, what or who would it be with and why?

DGP: Would love to collab with Timothée Chalamet; incredible personal style. Fresh, daring, and has a chameleon look that would be fun to explore and design with.

JF: Let’s talk about the big picture for your brand in terms of retail expansion, product extension... what... where... Who and why?

DGP: My strategy is direct to customer via my site but I’m planning on capsule collections for luxury retailers, too. My focus will be on special collaborations with influencers/artists for limited edition pieces.

JF: What is your feeling about social media when it comes to your brand...? And educating people about what you do?

DGP: Like it or not, it’s all about social media right now and I don’t see that waning anytime soon.  In my opinion, a successful brand needs to be nimble and ready to adapt to changing trends and times! Social media opens one’s brand to people worldwide in an instant. That’s exciting to me!

RUFSKIN … 15 years later... California Dust

It has been 15 years since the first stretch denim swim/underwear line caused an almost incendiary reaction on the internet. RUSKIN  was the very first to develop a collection focused solely on stretch denim and it literally set that segment of the online market on fire. It is what put RUFSKIN on the map as innovators and set them apart from the speedo based swimwear and bikini/novelty underwear websites.

In celebration of that momentous event, RUFSKIN has reimagined the shapes and fabrication to reflect a new era for that fabric and to attract a new gneration of shoppers; new washes, new silhouettes and as usual, they will lead the pack in design and merchandising. No other underwear/swimwear/active wear website has done what they have done and continue to do year after year with such great consistency.

meet Michael Y of MARCUSE

Just as it must be cocktail time somewhere, the same might be said of summer or beach season. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are winding down from a pretty good beach filled summer while those of us in Southern Hemisphere are gearing up for the coming sand and surf season. In a final scenario there might be those of us who are looking ahead to the next warm weather getaway on some tropical island.

Keeping all this in mind, I turn your attention to Marcuse. If you’ve not heard of the brand then allow me to introduce you to a burgeoning swimwear brand. Its designer is from down under and headquartered in Sydney,  founded and designed by and Michael Y ( he likes his anonymity). Its safe to say that  there is all kinds of sexiness coming from this brand whether you are about to hit Bondi Beach, Blacks Beach or the beaches of Bali.

So now in his own words let Michael speak about his brand and himself….

Jeffrey Felner: Can you give us a brief history of you and your brand?

Michael Y: I graduated from fashion design college in Sydney, Australia. After working in the fashion industry for a few years I decided to work on my own and in 2010 started MARCUSE, a designer men’s swimwear and underwear label. Actually, creating MARCUSE seemed the natural thing to do after spending many summers at Bondi beach and feeling that there was a gap in this type of market.

Our goal has always been the same, which is to create swimwear that makes you feel great and look sexy.  We started off with swimwear, and then 2 years later came the underwear line, and most recently men’s sporty beach apparel in 2014. Time flies and in May it will be our seventh year.

Jeffrey Felner: Do you have any plans for further brand extensions... why and what would they be?

Michael Y: We’re always on the look-out for any opportunities for the brand to grow and develop. But, we want the expansion to make sense, be sustainable and in line with our way of thinking – which is trying retain some exclusivity to the brand. We don’t mind being a smaller, ‘private’ label – for now. We don’t wholesale MARCUSE to too many websites or any department stores. We’re sold at selected stores in 12 different countries, such as Aussie boys in Sydney, Les Dessous d'Apollon in France and Trim Pittsburgh in the U.S.  – And naturally through Marcuse.com.

I think no brand can afford to remain stagnant, plus it doesn’t fit with creativity and survival to do so. Again, if it makes sense we may offer new lines, product improvement [90% of our swimwear is now made using quality Italian fabric]; enter new markets or distribution channels. Most recently, we’ve thought there’s been opportunity for us to work on more underwear products and we’re very excited about the upcoming launch of MARCUSE’s new underwear collection in the second half of this year.

Jeffrey Felner: You have a very specific target audience so let’s speak to that topic ... why? Do you plan on expand that base audience? And what do you believe you bring to the table when it comes to swimwear and underwear?

Michael Y: Actually, we know we have a diverse mix of customers, which we think is a great thing. But, there’s something our customers all share in common – they want to look great, feel sexy and have fun! We try to appeal to those that want to look great, stand out from the crowd and get the extra confidence to do so by wearing MARCUSE.

This is part of what I think MARCUSE offers.  For me, I felt that most of the swimwear labels out there were focused on looks for sports and recreation. I wanted to introduce more of an element of fashion, design and creativity which in turn creates uniqueness.   This is something we feel sets MARCUSE apart and at which we work at, season after season.

Jeffrey Felner: If you could choose any collaboration with another brand or designer, who and what would it be and why?

Michael Y: The late Gianni Versace – we love him for his creative (sometimes crazy) designs and for having not been afraid of using colour in his collections. It would have been amazing to work with such legend.

Jeffrey Felner: If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would they be and why?

Michael Y: Elton John – every dinner party needs a funny queen

The late Tina Chow – who will always remain an icon in my eyes

Beyoncé – who else?

Queen Elizabeth – she always comes across as a lovely, humble lady with a sense of wit too

Ryan Reynolds – personal reasons…

the summer staycation 2017

Now that summer is finally upon us, the question arises whether or not you will be going away for your summer vacation or weekends or will you be sticking close to home.

With the help of Ilde Swimwear, Ilde Goncalves (designer), Tim Christian (model), Craig MacLeod (photographer) on the left coast and then Todd Hanshaw (stylist), Pascal Pastrana, Drew Hanley, Jimmy Pezzino (models) and Eduardo Lucero (photographer) on the right coast; there are a few options for where and how you sport your summer swimsuits and spend your free time close to home.

Whether you choose black top streets and roofs of New York (Williamsburg to be exact) or Black’s Beach in La Jolla and whether you choose to do it alone or with friends, don’t forget to wear your Ilde Swimwear or maybe just wear it around your neck... you get the idea!

Whichever you choose there is no question that fun in the sun, frolicking in the water or just baking in the sun’s heat will all be offered up on the menu of activities.
