LOYD / FORD Fall 2020...

As written at the onset of my familiarity with LOYD/FORD I understood that this is an evolutionary brand; meaning, yes, they create newness each season but never revolutionary changes and what might have been a trend for some turns into a signature for them.

An evolution of bringing couture quality and construction into RTW and making the clothes more accessible in every way. We have found the brand's DNA and we focus on the designs we love without any compromise. Franck Ford

Imagine two designers whose singular goal is to manufacture and design clothes for women who will wear them and see themselves as beautiful and well turned out. The beauty and significance of LOYD/FORD is not that they are trend driven or because some D list celebrity or so-called influencer has decried the brand as the next best thing since sliced bread.

Rarely does any reviewer or review speak or address commercial aspects, so let me spell it out for you … these clothes consistently sell far better than a laundry list of all those ubiquitous brands that offer nothing but hype, inspiration, advertising and trend of the moment.

An alternative way to view their work is to know that they are not of the “sheep” like variety of designers who follow, they are designers who LEAD and there aren’t many who can stake that claim. The clothes are impeccably made and do not require any pseudo-intellectual bull for each collection’s genesis…  it is always distinctive /unique, sometimes glamorous somewhat subdued occasionally but always designed for women with discerning taste who are fashion independents rather than fashion “sheep.” The LOYD/FORD designers’ acumen and longevity have allowed them to exhibit their extraordinary range of talents whether in silhouettes, fabrications, technique and even color ranges.

For fall 2020 LOYD/FORD offers an an amazing assortment of silhouettes, fabrications, prints, textures and signature pieces while providing a choice for women who want quality, originality, pattern mixes and true fashion and not looks that appear fresh from your local thrift shop. The color range runs the gamut from neutral to prismatic. To me the brand uses shapes that don’t intimidate which are slightly tweaked to make them customized for the brand. There is no wrong way to wear the clothes ... yes designers show as they hope a collection will be bought and retailers tend to buy that way but the retail client may not be of like mind which means options/ choices and individuality.

Geraldine Stutz, of Bendel’s fame, might have referred to LOYD/FORD as “dog whistle fashion” meaning that their clothes speak at  a pitch that only a certain kind of fashionable woman can hear.

It is as if by some magical power that these designers continually tap into the zeitgeist of the retail customer resulting in almost inconceivable brick and mortar as well as online sales. In a perfect world, LOYD/FORD would receive some validation, recognition and gratification for their efforts within an industry that theoretically supports the talent of real honest to goodness designers with genuine creativity.

LOYD /FORD fall 2016 Paris

Bonjour Paris!!

In keeping with my current theme of “no trend is on trend, “next up is LOYD/FORD who has created their own trend, their own DNA and most importantly they have become a brand that has a secret weapon and that is … the “shit” sells! Despite little to no coverage from the media due to not playing by the pervasive rules (meaning no freebies to anyone and with no an ad budget), this brand has cultivated a devoted following at the wholesale and retail levels. No blah blah blah here ... just clothes that actually sell... what a concept! (This cannot be stressed enough)

Okay so you have a little background and now let’s talk clothes; Franck Ford and Steven Loyd are an “evolutionary tale” of a team who has grown their brand by presenting their own individual take on fashion. Part of their vision is that there is no trend except how the brand will move forward which means this season is about the “subtle explosion” of embellishment, techniques and silhouettes. Their base fabrication has always been lace but for Fall 2016 they have branched out to include georgette, gazar, 4 ply silk and tulle. What needs to be noted here is that all beading is executed by hand and not by machine, no shortcuts are taken during any part of manufacture and all beading designs originate from the designers. Even the pearls are single knotted and applied one by one. In other words, this is pretty damn as close to actual couture as one might get.

The LOYD/FORD team offers a variety of silhouettes, lengths and shapes which are all unified by the singular vision of the 2 designers and their clients who have embraced them open armed. The clothes skew to a body conscious woman who is not afraid to be sexy nor is she a sheep or in other words she doesn’t want to follow the flock; she is a fashion independent, possibly a warrior, who wants to be seen as such. These clothes are germane to the brand and celebrate women’s femininity in ways that few others can achieve.

Please understand that the clothes are deceptively simple as these are the kind of clothes that do not require am “how to wear” manual. The “sweatshirts” are a perfect foil to the materials they are made from combined with their treatment as are the more “sport wear” pieces, the easy peasy tee shirts dresses, the pleating, the exquisitely designed and rendered fishtail gown and much more are this brand’s evolution. It would be almost foolish of me to not mention the ultimate pleated tux shirt in gazar or the one shoulder black ‘n white.

The timing of the collection couldn’t be more of a well thought out offering as so many other designers have delved unsuccessfully into evening clothes while others have practically ignored or abandoned the category. One extra feather in their collective cap is that not an inch of the ubiquitous nude beaded tulle/soufflé is present. By the way, they focus on evening because that is what they do and not as a lark .

All in all LOYD/FORD offers its clientele an almost casual way of dressing up and not looking like just another me too collection. These guys deserve their due and not be held hostage by a very broken fashion system/ business that glorifies the untalented and turns their nose up at the very talented. KUDOS to you both!

LOYD / FORD spring 2015

One of the things that has become so apparent to me about this design team is that they defy conventions and write their own rules when it comes to their collections. What is so peculiar to those observations is that their output is steeped in the oldest traditions of fashion and yet they remain totally modern and in a class by themselves.

In today’s world of fashion we have so called designers who don’t drape or don’t sketch or both, let alone sew. So many of the current crop of so called designers talk and talk and espouse and offer all this blah blah blah about their collections as if that can explain away poor design and bad choices. Well, here we have 2 designers who act as a collective one man band, they drape, they sew, they supervise their production, they buy their own piece goods and they have only one agenda which is to promote their brand. Such qualities, work ethic and efforts deserve attention in the fashion arena as they are true designers, not stylists and not directors but designers who design. Their intimate relationship with their product dictates the incredible attention to detail as well as the overall perfection of their output.

For spring 2015, LOYD / FORD has positioned the brand for expansion by enlarging the collection, upping the ante with their incredible handwork and beading,  additional silhouettes such as pants, more long dresses and introducing color to what had been a primarily black collection. In essence, this is an evolutionary step aimed at the growth of the brand. Such changes strengthen and insure their position amongst the highest caliber of international fashion brands. Some will scoff at my assessment but these eyes see greatness and what they don’t see is the current “me too” syndrome …. The sameness that pervades fashion at this time. Imagine ... designers who have a mission, a voice and a vision!

To that end, let’s talk about the excruciating wealth of detail and the visual extravagance of these clothes. My take is that they have a signature shape which is possibly referential to Dior and even possibly Balenciaga. Please visualize the “new look” fitted narrow top to release into that explosion of a fuller bottom half  and that is where Balenciaga enters the picture when he did his bubble like skirts which were again the bottom of what was a fitted top half. No matter the silhouette and no matter the amount of detail, the LOYD / FORD dresses remain light to the eye with an almost ethereal quality about them; not an easy task given the extravagance of details whether in beading, embellishments or fabric effects.

Make no mistake, if you haven’t already guessed, these designers have made a diehard fan of me by showing me that there are still designers who design and actually have original thoughts in their heads! How positively refreshing that they have a “signature,” that they don’t believe that less is more, that they have learned who their clientele is and most of all that the world of fashion needs them for they exemplify the creative spirit that has made fashion an international topic of discussion.

What you see in the slideshow is but a tease of their oeuvre but you will get the picture if you are savvy enough. These are not clothes that are to everyone’s liking but they are the clothes that speak to me as well as to a cast of international A list retailers. The new year will bring them increased exposure... whether at Zurich fashion week or in St. Moritz in high season. The stage is being set for international recognition they have earned and now it will be their turn to show off the fruits of their labors.

P.S.  if you missed their page in the November issue of ELLE, please have a read and don’t forget to wear LOYD / Ford this year and every year to come.
