Hannibal Lecter meets Rosie the Riveter meets Gilbert Adrian
Well this is a collection that can put him and London
fashion week on the map big time. It is pure chic, slick, razor sharp and
classy as hell. Imagine that, and the clothes are easy to understand and don’t
require a road map or a litany of inspiration. I have watched and kept track of
this guy since day one and this is the culmination of everything that he has
done. This proves that he is a technician, a designer and one smart guy to
offer clothes like this when the world of fashion has turned to mediocrity,
absurdity and me too.
In many ways, there are shades of McQueen, of Ungaro and of
Montana but no matter as he has offered his take on 21st century
glamour by looking back to go forward. If one had to hazard a guess, it would
be that he now might be a very likely candidate for Dior as this proves he is
so much more than fashion trickery and shock. He worked leather to the point
that other designers who use the material should be shamed and never use it
again. There is skill and lightness of hand no matter the fabric that few
designers can accomplish let alone have the skill set to achieve.
It is my opinion that Gareth Pugh has raised the bar to
dizzying heights and can you imagine, not a hoodie in sight! Actually, not a
trend in sight, these are timelessly elegant urbane clothes for women who want
to look like women and not like unmade beds.
Please take note that he has accomplished this with a
minimum of silhouettes worked in multiple ways and it takes an adept designer to
do this without looking repetitive or be thought of as lazy. This was IMHO a
tour de force of what fashion can be when in the right hands!
PS... Let the so called media elite get damp in the pants
over JW Anderson, but I’ll take Pugh any time of day and like I always say...
you gotta sell the shit or else it’s just a bunch of hype with nothing to back
it up ! ..Think Gucci…
