Lutz Huelle & Andrew Gn fall 2021

I previously wrote about the yin and yang of fashion implying the good and the bad but here it is about mood, appeal and brand DNA of two notable collections.

Lutz Huelle, without question is an acquired taste, but his collections have evolved over time to reflect his maturation process as well as massaging his brand’s DNA. I’d have to say that this particular collection is probably his most commercial (not meant in a negative sense) and that its appeal will reach a much larger audience. It is timeless and classic and never boring and never either of those qualities in a way you’d expect. You can see it as total looks or you can see it in pieces and this season, I believe that most collections should be seen as pieces and not total looks.

I’m impressed with this man’s talent and how he has morphed over the years from a very quirky trendy kind of “of the moment” look to a more seasonless and ageless one and yet he never surrendered his DNA.

Andrew Gn is a designer one  that might compare to  the great  designers  of an era and has  revived a seemingly long lost art of fashion design (a collection in its truest sense); his clothes are precise, the suits structured, the embellishments lush but he shares with Lutz a timelessness that is becoming  more rare these days, What saddens me  greatly is that  this collection, which I  find to be stunning in  color silhouette, fabrications, construction and of course embellishment is more of a wishful thinking one rather than a collection that reflects our times. I certainly cannot say it is commercial in any sense and if anything, I might compare it to the couture rather than to RTW.

Gn presented this stellar collection but we must ask ourselves when and where is any one wearing most of it and that is the sadness. I’d much prefer to appraise the collection without that compelling caveat.

Andrew Gn fall 2020

In an ocean of schlock, shock and awe there floats Andrew Gn who presented a meticulously rendered collection of exquisite quality for women of discerning taste who have no desire to look like circus freaks or badly wrapped gift boxes.

No, I don’t not think this is everyone’s cup of tea nor can I ever be a fan of that horrific length that makes women look like they are standing in a hole but there are clothes here which are just plain and simply beautifully executed.

Mind boggling embroideries, a color palette to delight the eyes and everything from day dresses to suits to cocktail dresses to coats to gowns... imagine that!... an honest to goodness collection in Paris no less.

I can’t say I was personally attracted to the prints but I’m sure there are some who will find them quite appealing. He makes a grand use of pleating in rather basic and wearable shapes but that is his M.O. for his dresses... albeit a few looked a tad little matronly.

Show me 10 collections that can sit beside this one instead of the lauded and applauded that will never see a human body in them other than on a runway.

Andrew Gn spring 2020

So this is what a well-conceived, well thought out and meticulously rendered collection  looks like; Gn is a master of dressmaking whether in strict silhouette or in flou. He is also an incredible proponent of embroidery and embellishment. My only issues with this collection were how it was styled and that below the knee length, both of which are easily remedied once in store.

Unquestionably these are rich lady clothes that look like what they are. He is not stuck on a shape or a fabrication or a theme unless you consider exquisitely made clothes to be a theme. His name is not on the tip of everyone’s tongue but he is a true modern master of fashion. In a fleeting tangential moment I thought “OMG what he could do at Dior!”

This is not a collection that will be universally liked or accepted since it leans more to the conservative side of fashion and yet the clothes will take on the age of the wearer. Marinate on thois thought for  minute  and compare this in the spirit of how you  view Celine which will grab  accolades. He is why savvy buyers come to Paris to find clothes that no one else dares make… elegant, tasteful, refined and soigné.

In many ways he is a throwback to the glory days or YSL, Ungaro and Givenchy and yet he remains modern in his oeuvre without “trendizing” the collection. I watch his collections season and after season and he can be a bit erratic but I always marvel at the perfection of the make.

Andrew Gn fall 2018

Apparently after a sabbatical of sorts, Mr. Gn has returned to the kind of clothes that he is known for and bears his signature brand of style.

The dresses are precise, laser sharp, couture like embroideries (for the most part) and have no age. If there are any negatives to be  found they would be the styling which certainly takes away from the  beauty of the clothes, the last group of these sort of engorged florals which are less than graceful and a bit cartoonish and those over exaggerated almost aeronautical shoulders that were employed on some pieces.

The one time it seemed to work best was on a black coatdress with something that resembled more of a capelet rather than a shoulder treatment. The Saint Laurent ruffles of the Hedi and Anthony eras seem oddly out of place on clothes that are far more sophisticated than those produced by the aforementioned brand. NOTE: in that last group there is an exquisitely embellished black jacket/ blouse that certainly could pass as couture.

It is refreshing to see clothes like this... like them or not... Even I have to question who wears clothes like this and where do they wear them to…. But I would rather just focus on the esthetics here and say these are beautifully rendered clothes in the tradition of high fashion that truly represent fashion as designed by a single designer.

I somehow get this gnawing feeling that the little army cap cum fez is a nod to YSL.
