Schiaparelli haute couture fall 2020

Daniel Roseberry has given us a gift… he has provided us with the fullest emotion of the couture and that is fantasy. Couture is not for the usual consumer but only for those who can afford and lust for the most exquisitely executed clothes made to measure!

The film (on vogue.com)  is the designer sketching the collection and the images shown are the sketches which cause the viewer to the only dream of what might be or might have been if the collection was actually made.

He infuses the DNA of the eponymous brand with great skill and élan….  Something so many other designers should take note of… heritage brands have their own vocabulary as you will see.

The format of the review is a bit changed but my sentiments and reviews never ignore what fashion is about and what it was built on!

Akris fall 2020

Albert Kriemler has become a master of slick, precise, inventive, well designed clothes for women with the most erudite of taste. It takes a great deal of talent and expertise to do what he does and that is render clothes that are thoroughly modern, minimal in their own way but always in the most diverse and creative fabrications.

In a collection  such as this, the discerning eye will take note  that no these are not the clothes that set the world aflame but they are trendy in the most low key way and rendered with surgical precision, the styling is simple, the palette chic and sophisticated and when is  the last time you heard those words applied to a collection and lastly, they have great visual appeal.

There doesn’t need to be any discussion about inspiration and all that crap because the clothes are what they are … beautiful and in some cases exquisite and they speak for themselves. They don’t come cheap but then again, the worst crap we have seen is stratospherically expensive and not nearly as perfectly rendered or conceived.

I tip my hat to the designer who took the helm of a company that was one of the dowdiest collections in its time and transformed it into an urbane soigné grouping of apparel for those with a keen eye on style, proportion and color.

CHANEL fall 2020

Well, it took a year but the mold is broken. Virginie took the brave giant step of not only changing the pacing of the show but she has in a way sort of redirected the brand.
On one hand it is a bravo and on the other hand it is a sadness.

I think the side snapped leg pants and skirts were a bit overkill as were the hot pants and those buccaneer boots. Much of what we saw was extremely commercial and ... well… generic and that is something that Karl was never accused of. This collection, to me, was all about dissecting it ... pieces ...  tons of pieces… blouses, skirts, jackets and piled on accessories. I even saw a riff of the Lacroix tee shirt that signaled the change in how we see fashion from the cover of Anna’s first issue of Vogue in the USA.

I can’t say it was a great collection nor can I say it ghastly but there were lots of beautiful pieces although they may not have been assembled as one would have liked. There were a couple of superb real Chanel looking jackets and I even noticed a riff on a Levi jacket to resemble a Chanel jacket or vice versa.

Maybe what I’m really trying to say is the collection didn’t translate the excitement which Karl was so famous  for, so either this will be a stroke of genius on Virginie’s part to have parted with the “old way” and struck out on a new path for the revered brand or this will  be an unmitigated flop.

In an afterthought I realized that a lot of what was missing was the visual DNA of the brand and the fact the brand sort of made this seismic shift from jolie madame to jeune fille in one season…. I guess we shall have to wait to see how this evolves.

PS… I   do think Karl would have sneered at any of the pieces that came off as trend driven and there were more than one or two of them!
