In keeping with the theme of no trend Is a trend, I present
case in point Dries Van Noten, who proves himself a fashion independent season
after season. Being an on again off again fan of his oeuvre, each season my
eyes delight with the visual treat that is all his. This is not to say that
every season I like what I see but Dries is one of those designers who
represents the sum of his parts yet each
part can be a fascination unto itself.

This season Van Noten offers a feast of fashion. It is as
visually stimulating as it is his own stance on what it takes to show for fall
2016. Think pearls, leopard, tiger, tailored, chic, androgyne, white pique
shirts, prep school jackets, deliciously luxe, louche, decadent, somewhat
YSL-ish, somewhat Helmut Newtonish, eccentric in a good way, python, slick, urbane, Night Porterish
and all Dries all the way when seen as a collection. Without going any further
with Paris collections, it is apparent to me that this is one of the stand outs
in an international season of me too collections and also of collections that
try to pass of “circus clothes” for fashion.

Take good look at what a designer does when he has a message
and is actually immersed in their profession; the fabrications, the
colorations, the at lack of a better word the sophistication that these clothes
just ooze and then you can see what is possible when real designers design and
don’t need to pretend or hide behind their blah blah blah. In the instance of
fashion, the proof is it all is what we see on the runway for it is there that
creativity is front and center and it is there that each designer conveys their
message. Dries sent out a message loudly and clearly that he is on the top of
his game in an arena that too often applauds the less talented.

Please take note that even with Van Noten’s press release inspirations;
this collection lives up to its hype as well as stands alone without an iota of
explanation. There is no head shaking or WTF is this guy talking about or wtf
is he thinking.
