PRABAL GURUNG FALL 2021

I can remember it like yesterday when this young man appeared on the scene and I immediately thought well here is the next generation’s Bill Blass. It didn’t take long for Demi Moore to appear in one of delicious creations and I was convinced had the goods to be a 21st century Blass!

HOW WRONG COULD I HAVE BEEN!

A brilliant start tuned out to be this seasonal jumble of clothes, some of which I will say are pretty (not many, but some) and every season it’s just clothes and apparently everything old is new again… from the original Ungaro-esque shirring to the puddling mammoth bell bottoms to bare midriffs and so much more.

My feeling is that when a middling woman’s designer suddenly turns to menswear to bloat a collection that it is a foreboding of what’s to come and it’s not good! There is no cohesion to the collection and no signature which seems to be the M.O. of almost all designers.

You have a look and see you tell me ... what, what, where, why and does he know something no one else knows?

Proenza Schouler & Prabal Gurung prefall 2019

So the boys of Proenza Schouler bought back their company or shall I say someone did... and from the looks of it they will have a long wait for the ROI. Once again these clothes say nothing other than androgyny to a certain point and a lot of been there done that... and Zara. They obviously haven’t learned that clothes don’t come with explanations for their being and clothes like these won’t look like much or make much of a statement hanging on a rail. My advice would be get a look... make a statement and stick to it because shopping for a new client each season is not the answer to success which brings up to the next designer.

Prabal Gurung who when he started made the most perfectly exquisite dresses and now for as long I can recall seems to be shopping for a new  client each season. Yes there are some pretty gowns but as far as continuity, the collection hits a lot of speed bumps along the way. The addition of menswear is somewhat silly unless of course one is a wannabe designer home boy. The gowns speak for themselves and the rest is just clothes for the sake of clothes and without a season.

I understand that the demand on these designers is almost at break point with all the collections but wouldn’t it be easier to follow a path than continually taking a different one season after season to find the correct destination?

Prabal Gurung et al. spring 2019

This is a collection that is emblematic of what is happening on Seventh Avenue. Apparently many designers have decided it is a wise move to grow their businesses by making a segue into menswear………………..wrong!

The men’s market is equally at sea and as saturated as the women’s if not even more so stuck for newness. Most of these designers will probably never produce the menswear but oh the Instagarmmers! The influencers? The selfies? The swag! All for likes which I have yet to see what that translates to.

My assessment of this particular collection … well it was colorful! I needn’t go further; you already know the rest of the story

Why do I next envision all stores will only have leased shop in shops and no more specific men’s and women’s departments just stores full of clothes … sort of all like all gender restrooms!

the Row, Carolina, Thom, Baja, Rosie, Prabal Spring 2015 NYFW

As has become the S.O.P. (standard operating procedure) of NYFW, or New York Fashion Week, there has been a tsunami of shows and it seems to keep growing season after season. As has been said here before, fashion week has become far too “democratic” resulting in this tidal wave of fashion at every price and of every possible variety. My particular focus is usually at the top end of spectrum and with that in mind; today will be about several collections rather than just one... or the Fashion Week Follies!

As Penny from Big Bang is fond of saying … “holy crap on a cracker!”

The Row: apparently those diminutive titans of fashion have decided that their top shelf collection will be Eileen Fisher meets the order of the Fashion Monks. What started out as a luxury collection with a sort of cool Lou Lou factor, if you catch my drift has morphed to quite another look. Today what we see is some shapeless and manipulated monastic “robes” suitable for those who have nothing but money and a great desire to hide what’s under those clothes. At one time you might have called the clothes artsy or Bohemian, now they can be classed as  the WTF collection.

Baja East: besides price, how does a collection like this find its way into the same class as Oscar, Marc, Carolina, Rucci and Ralph … just to name a few. Yeah okay, so it’s theoretically luxury down time clothes for the very rich. In my eye, there is not a single original thought here unless one considers caftans that look like old bedspreads or more workout clothes in cashmere as being the newest the latest and the greatest. Amazing what a little media hype can do for a brand even if the brand is nothing to write home about.

Rosie Assoulin: with boat loads of media hype, a very influential god mother and a very good running start as a new brand, this collection took off as she offered a somewhat fresher younger look for evening wear and then came E G O and believing one’s press. This looks like a design student’s wet dream with some Haute couture touches. Can no one see? Does no one look? Are designers only surrounded by “yes men?” wake up look around... look at the clothes... look at how they are presented WTF... wake up!!!

Prabal Gurung: here suffice to say this collection and many of the past ones continue to be incomprehensible to me. It is one of those collections that looks tortured and over worked and meets the media standard for fabulous and modern. One day, Mr. Gurung will return to his roots of designing exquisite dresses that were of the chic and classy variety rather then what he is supposedly trying to pass off as modern.

Thom Browne: one really must tip their collective hat to this man. He has shaken up the industry with his own singular brand of fashion. He is a showman extraordinaire. He is a provocateur. He is a one man band who can match up to any symphony orchestra if you catch my drift. To criticize the collection is really a sucker’s game but you cannot deny that this man shows the rest of the industry that dreams and fantasy still exist in fashion. Some might consider those dreams to be nightmares but Brown is astoundingly on top of his game yes, in his own world. This is a collection of dissection and imagination and not for the faint of heart.

Carolina Herrera: She has come a long long way since being dubbed “our lady of the sleeves!” It has been some time since she was the go to resource for ladies such as Jackie O. For the past few years her design studio has been churning out fashion that they consider to be younger and hipper than what Carolina herself had envisioned at the beginning. To me, most of the time, the clothes are irrelevant and somewhat generic and in some instances just plain who cares! This season stuck me particularly odd as I saw more than just a hint of Ralph Rucci and those slapped on “art moments” that opened the show. Yes the clothes have a particular look and hopefully they have a particular audience but the questions remain who, what and why

Fall 2014 ..Jason Wu ..Prabal Gurung .. NY Collections

Here’s the thing about expectation; It just never seems to equal the reality of a situation. The instance here is Jason Wu for Fall 2014. My expectation and anticipation for his collections are ones of never being disappointed and rarely has that been off but this season all I seem to feel is that there is a lot of foreplay and no happy ending.

Yes, his vision of the latest trend silhouette is more his than the trend itself but it lacks the spark that Mr. Wu has usually and more consistently delivered. He makes his statement for long and slimmer as well as some statement about androgyny which maybe have something to do with his latest collaboration with Hugo Boss. The deepest jewel tone palette was used but it only provided a richness rather than impact of any kind. Mr. Wu remains true to himself but this collection seemed to lack his surprises and his usually successful riskier looks.

As for Prabal Gurung, one just has to wonder who in hell is whispering in his ear; he is in desperate need of a new “design whisperer.” It was love at first sight the first time his clothes appeared on my radar but “Oh Mommy” how times have changed. For Fall 2014, Mr. Gurung has tortured and over worked the clothes to a new level of manipulation. Apparently he seems to think that an ode to Givenchy and Haider was a great idea which certainly didn’t bode well from the get go.

Rarely am I confounded by the construction of a garment but hell... These must have been a nightmare to make a sample let alone their production ….provided he sells any of it. One can only surmise that the pursuit to editorial can be rocky at best.

Workmanship and craft are at a high point here but what a waste when the end result is so convoluted and over thought and over wrought! It saddens to me think that he might really be a great talent and has been lead down some rosy path to destruction by ill-advised stylists and editors. What struck me is that amazingly the evening wear worked so well but that might be attributed to the more monochromatic combinations.

A thought occurred to me today and that would be when Ms. W finally does step away from her perch, and the new editor takes the helm, what will happen to these young designers who curried her favor are dismissed in favor a whole new crop who curry favor with the new hire? As is the wont... out with the old and in with the new...are you reading this loud and clear?
