Jason Wu Spring 2017

Having been an early cheer leader of Jason Wu, I am somewhat flummoxed by his progressive devolving. Once upon a time, it occurred to me that he might be a future Blass or one of a new generation of the formidable stalwarts of Seventh Avenue but alas he has morphed into “too bad Wu sad.”

YIKES!

What happened to slick, to refined and to clothes that could be worn in the real world? Can we speak of the Diane Freis number that crept in or the spider web transparent pieces or the cheesy metallics … or did I miss something here? So much of the fabric looks like a nickel a mile and even the lush embroidery looks a bit cheap and tacky.

What happened to refined and elegant... they surely have left the building!

pre-fall 2016 Philipp Plein & BOSS

Philipp Plein took a 180 this season as it is possible he had exhausted the world’s stud supply with his previous collections or possibly he has decided that he needs to go a more commercial route. For the most part, gone are the studs and gone are the hard core biker chick/rocker girl looks that previously flooded his collections and even the skull has all but disappeared . Don’t get me wrong, he hasn’t abandoned his DNA as much as he has just massaged it and interpreted that DNA in a different way; less overt sexy and a lot less costumey or maybe hookerish. Some of the shapes will be familiar, some much more grown up and wearable and some new. There is a definite fascination with lace, with butterflies and with his signature prints. What will be most interesting is if this is a precursor to what is to come or if this is just a one shot wonder.

Jason Wu has decided that BOSS is the 21st century’s answer to the original Jil Sander. It is spare, minimal, hard edged, rather commercial and with a limited color palette. There is this aura of architectural and somewhat of a sterile feeling that comes with such minimalism. Maybe he is right to take this tack as the fashion world is starting to look like the linen department with tonnage of white sheets turned into wearing apparel and when so many collections look they have been designed by one communal design team. One can say it is wearable but certainly not exciting but just maybe he has taken to ascribe to the original genesis of early fall and that was to sell clothes with no fanfare and no design fireworks. Pre-fall was the appetizer to the regular Fall seaon which is the course dinner.

Pre-fall 2016 .. a brief but telling synopsis

Fashion has become a business that is short on originality and creativity and even shorter on being an independent thinker. Pre-fall 2016 certainly shows that concept off to a great degree and furthermore proffers the thoughts that designers are floundering by having no signature looks and even worse trying to be a “me too” or an “on trend” collection. Apparently the word relevant has crept into the fashion vernacular but the definition seems to be that if you pander to 20 somethings then you are relevant! Well, friends that’s a recipe for disaster not success and you can quote me! Here are just a few examples that demonstrate these thoughts.

Elie Saab who is usually on my fave list has opted to go astray with his version of Hedi’s Saint Laurent. How sad!

Erdem which at one time was excruciatingly beautiful now looks like the re imagined Valentino.

Michael Kors continues his disconnect between his image ads and collections. What ever happened to a great American designer who made great American clothes?

Jason Wu apparently took a cue from a past Ferragamo collection and yes it is time to lose those Rachel Zoe puddling pant lengths.

Altuzarra has decided his identity lies with being a Proenza Schouler continuation.

Alex Wang … well he just continues to design for H&M but now with a decidedly Hedi influence.

Atelier Nicolas Caito.. the back rooms of fashion

Few, if any, of the fashion flock ever discuss, contemplate or comprehend how a dress or article of clothing actually transforms from sketch to garment; clothes do not mysteriously morph from drawing or concept to reality. In today’s world of fashion there are so many so called designers or creative directors that actually do not have the skill set to go beyond pointing or possibly sketching, let alone draping. So now most large brands employ scores of people whose only job is to sketch or others whose job it is to work on or with actual garments. In years gone by the magical transformation from flat paper to cloth occurred “in the back,” the inner sanctum which was located behind the showroom space where sample makers and designers met on a daily basis to actually create.

Today’s focus is about Atelier Nicolas Caito whose profession and person is to literally make magic or in other words to take a designer’s sketch/idea and turn it into a unit of fashion reality. Have you ever wondered how Balenciaga, Capucci or even a brand like Hood By Air can create pieces that defy gravity, defy all logic or are just plain beyond the scope of one’s comprehension? Firstly, two of the three mentioned designers actually draped and sketched which surely goes a long way to creating wondrous fashion, but then there are those who haven’t the abilities to even accomplish one of those tasks which means you need a “toiliste” or translated to  patternmaker. It is the patternmaker who actually interprets and creates from flat sketch or concept to an actual three dimensional garment while solving construction issues while remaining mindful of the intricacies of each particular style. The patternmaker is the one person who must be of the same mindset as the designer, if even for that moment during the design process; think of a translator at the United Nations and their import for conveying exactly what the speaker actually says.

The patternmaker (toiliste) is the sole person responsible for those jaw dropping runway pieces that will eventually grace the racks of some retail establishments. The patternmaker is a miracle worker of sorts and it falls upon them to make the impossible possible. For instance, if you look at Proenza Schouler from this past spring and you "oohed and aahed" about a seemingly amazing red dress, you might want to thank Nicolas Caito and his team for making that possible as the task of turning dreams to reality is what he and his team do on an everyday basis whether for Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, J. Mendel or The Row and that’s just to name a few. It is Atelier Nicolas Caito that is the sorcerer or voodooist of fashion who has the vocabulary and skill sets to pull rabbits out of hats and convert the fantastical into fact.

So, you might wonder what prepared a gentleman like Mr. Caito for the tasks at hand and you have only to read his resume which includes Hermes, Lanvin (haute couture), Rochas, Margiela and Blass. The man’s talents know no bounds and his well-honed abilities are the sort that defy his age and that is why he is a man in demand within the cognoscenti of fashion.

Next time you see a dress parade down a catwalk you might want to consider the genesis of the garment and not just the end result as a product from designer. In most cases said designer is only as good as his or her “toiliste.” Step up to the plate and take that extra step of actually considering more than just the immediate reflex of reacting to the finished product as what you see can tell a long story as to its path to completion.
