Paris men’s spring 2018 .. A PLAY IN 3 ACTS

Chalk up 3 more for the who cares column...
Balenciaga.. click image to enlarge

Opening day of Paris collections for men and the best I can come up with is who cares… it ranges from the Spartan and almost sterile Lemaire to the patently absurd pedestrian pile of rags from Balenciaga designed to shock and draw attention by the sweetheart of fashion victims everywhere … Demna Gvasalia… so let the fawning and oohing and aaahing and cooing begin ….  And just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse there is the unclassifiable Facetasm who provided the so called “male” answer to the much ballyhooed and copied Tom Ford caped gown.

The truth is in front of you and you won’t need me to guide you through, so have a look and have at it!

Hardly what one could call an auspicious or propitious start to the last stop of the fashion caravan?

P.S. one doesn't have to think twice as to why the retail business sucks!

Lemaire/ Walter Van Beirendonck men's SPRING 2017

Now that I have everyone shaking their heads and hopefully I have your attention. Let’s begin:
I can’t think of 2 more polar opposites when it comes to what each brand represents when it comes to menswear. WVB is a fantasist. CL is a purist and minimalist. One is less is more and the other, more is better. They are the yin and yang when it comes to their unique visions. Think of Lemaire as the music that accompanies mediation while WVB might be heavy metal!

What they share are qualities that should be apparent to the seasoned fashionphile but in more cases than not, a little explanation is needed. They obviously see menswear from opposite sides of the fence BUT what they have in common is the exquisite craft of fashion which is celebrated and honored by their oeuvre. Both men offer clothes of the highest caliber when it comes to finish and workmanship. Their tastes are as individual and as disparate as they can be but jeeeez … look at the quality. Top stitching and seaming that is straighter than a razor’s edge; the edges of WVB’s tulle embroidered pieces are nothing short of couture quality. These seemingly simple aspects of fashion are far too often overlooked especially by the so called fashion authorities as they are more concerned with venue, vomiting out a designer’s press release and who sat where. Ya think it could be that they can’t see it?
WVB is has the skill set of a couturier and the mindset of the maddest of scientists. Lemaire the micro surgeon who has the laser focus that yields clothes as meticulous and immaculate as any operating room in  any hospital. They share that skill of delivering impeccably well-made apparel for a very select few who can appreciate clothes beyond trend and afford the tariff… so to speak.

This review is not of the Instagram variety when you look, click and move on... This one you MUST read to find out how these 2 rather outstanding designers have the same end game. If you examine WVB collection you can see the most wonderful pants and some incredible pieces aimed at the collector of fashion and not of the fashion fawner while Lemaire offers clothes for those who insist on only perfection and understatement.

PS. The perfect navy jumpsuit from WVB or maybe the laser tailored grey parachute strap suit or the white flap closure suit? Lemaire’s shirts or top stitched pieces are without equal? The saffron zip front jacket or the ecru ¾ sleeved shadow windowpane shirt from Lemaire?

International fashion & style; Lemaire PFW fall 2015

What wonderful way to begin this last chapter of Fall 2015. Lemaire reminds that simple and clean and precise is not boring when handled properly. What is also abundantly clear is that this collection can serve as an object lesson for so many i.e. the Row, Jil Sander and a few more.

There are no rich bag lady clothes here. The clothes are precise but easy, they have an edge yet they have a great softness to them. One must then believe that the deft hand that creates these clothes knows exactly who his client is and what she comes to them for clothes to wear every day. Yes, again, these are clothes for women who have a career of just women who enjoy a good life and no these are not picking up the kids from soccer or Taekwon-Do instruction but no one would notice if they were worn to do those chores.

These are unobtrusive clothes that send that silent scream/signal of refinement, high quality and even a certain amount of swagger. Yes. They are very Parisian  but wildly cosmopolitan for any big city gal and maybe just any women who wants to wear the best and look her best and not look like some wannabe 20 year old or some old lady in a her daughters clothes. These are ageless and timeless clothes that build a wardrobe and never go out of style.

Imagine if editors understood that this is what modern looks like and not Proenza Schouler than looks like some design school project or that crap that Rodarte turns out at stratospheric prices. This is what the Row could look like if they didn’t cast their customer as a rich bag lady or had the eye  and maybe the powers that be at Jil might take note that it is possible to design spartan clothes without crossing the line to silly. And no, I do not believe that this is the end all do all but I do know that this is one facet of fashion that is so poorly addressed so often  by those who are ill equipped to deliver a product that is this precise, this discerning and this ageless.

Lemaire & van Beirendonck fall 2015 men’s

What might seem as an unlikely duo is actually quite a well matched paring in my mind. Both designers utilize their tailoring skills to achieve the most precise product. Lemaire comes from the school of clean, slick and modern as only a graduate of Hermes would know and he surely delivers his vision of modern, minimal and timeless apparel for men. Van Beirendonck comes from a more conceptual/ inspirational and artistic design ethic and yet the parallels are quite apparent… to me anyway!!

Opposites do indeed attract … especially if you strip away the most blatant and obvious differences. Both designers are master tailors and if you can look past the most obvious from Beirendonck you can see how exquisite the workmanship is which and what bears comparison to Lemaire. The jackets, coats, throws, even the pants, just reek of fine tailoring. While Lemaire has a much more classic palatable/understandable approach, van Beirendonck offers a more trend driven fashion scenario. The latter is not about trend as we know it or think of it, but his own personal vision for the season. I know I keep beating that Gucci horse to death but one would not have to look much further than these two abundantly talented men who could have certainly taken the reins of that ailing brand and made some magic.

So let’s just do a quick mental review of Lemaire and take note of the surplice/ wrap tops, the edges, the precise tailoring, the minimal layering and palette, the use of the safarienne, pea jackets, cardigans, the patch pockets and the lower placement of breast pockets just to offer a few features. The throws/ ruanas/ scarves are just enough to give that chic and soigne edge to these clothes. Simple shapes are taken to the height of fashion via nuance and superb craftsmanship, fit and workmanship.

Van Beirendonck offers many of these qualities but with a greater sense of humor and even more craftsmanship if you include the conceptual pieces. So much of what he shows might be at the elevated levels of ateliers rather than just mere workrooms. The tailoring is sublime and the patterning (ikats) and novelty prints are for those us who go beyond black and grey. The full legged pant is reminiscent of Hollywood glory days and the “art” sweaters are just that… art! ... but masterpeices. These are clothes that combine fantasy and reality and offer the wearer an opportunity to stretch his imagination. Even the palette is just so inviting and off kilter than it is hard to resist if you truly love fashion.

My question is simple... Do you dare?
