Thom Browne ... NYFW spring 2017

Who would have ever thought that Thom Browne would be the saving grace of an otherwise almost pathetic and awkward NYFW? This is not to say that his shows are ever dull or ever short on theatrics, workmanship or an endless imagination. In a burst of rumination, it occurred me that Thom Browne might be the American answer to John Galliano… say what?? .. Hear me out ... the man is all about telling a story when he shows, he provides a visual feast on many levels and often leaves his audience slack jawed! We are now speaking of how he shows and the quality and level of execution of the clothes and of the show itself. … Does this make any sense to you??  It does to me!

The clothes are a stroke of genius whether it be design or actual rendering. The trompe l’oeil is brilliantly worked to the point of awe, not shock and awe but AWE! In uncharacteristic tones, it is easy for me to say he is a master of his craft and has slowly evolved into a designer to be reckoned with and not just for some diversion, oddity or entertainment.

Let’s talk clothes: the shapes are easy, the color palette is perfectly spring (almost Easter egg/Pam Beachy colors), to some the clothes will look cartoonish but that is also because of the styling which is part and parcel of who Thom Browne is as a designer. If there was ever a collection that fills the bill of throw it on and zip it up and you’re dressed… well this is it… just add shoes and whatever else you think might be missing, which is not much. The shapes are easy and wearer friendly. Do I think this is Thom Browne going commercial?  ... Not by a long shot but I think, or shall I say I know, that this is a designer who designs, who evolves and who has perfected his craft and taken it to new levels on a consistent basis!

The clothes speak for themselves; each is a study in the art and craft of fashion as well as being part of the Thom Browne story for Spring 2107. KUDOS to you! I am duly impressed and thankful. OH BY THE WAY… the man has a signature that is distinctly his and not chasing a new client season after season but instead is widening and expanding his appeal without giving in to trend or “relevance.”
