Michael Kors fall 2019

You’ve no doubt read that that Trump is a poor man’s idea of a rich man and I say  this supposed homage is designed by someone who never set foot in that glorious and fantastical world that was called Studio 54.

Being of the same generation as Mr. Kors, though slightly older, I can recall that little skinny, high as a kite mop top dancing around while he was still dressing windows at Lothars on 57th Street. So, either he was way higher than I ever could be or we have totally different memories of what that pleasure palace held in terms of fashion.

I recall spandex tights with Julio’s bubble tops worn with Jourdan stilettos and lots of drag queens done up to the nines as well as celebrities galore whether on party nights or just another night out. Yes, Liza wore Halston and Diana Ross would come in stilettos, tank top and gym shorts with an afro wig and dance all night long. Nan Kempner wore YSL couture and I guess the rest of us either wore jeans or at the very least “our best” as every night there was a night to see and be seen and hopefully photographed.

What was shown today is more of homage to the Saturday night bridge and tunnel crowd, maybe more Saturday Night Fever (2001 Odyssey in Bayridge), that most of the regulars avoided like the plague. Yes Members Only patchwork leather jackets and armpits and assholes Mongolian lamb coats with flash and no cash dresses thinking they looked like a million dollars.

At my age I have come to realize that we, meaning my peers, have a selective memory and many have a habit of rewriting history but the people I still know who were there with us 4 and 5 nights a week never dressed like that or even anything close to it.

In the end this is a generation y or z or millennial, from Boise, idea of what inhabited Studio 54 in those heady years and that would be sad since it was far more glamorous and far less trashy than this.
PS .. dont you think the 70s have been mined enough by now
