Can it be that fashion’s new dictate is “make it ugly, make
it expensive, make it look like costumes and make sure it won’t sell no matter
what” because if it isn’t it should be or maybe there is a drug that is being internationally
circulated whose side effects include poor judgement, delusions of grandeur and
spouting esoteric arcane bull to justify what passes for fashion. There is this
anti-fashion movement afoot that offends the true merchants and realistic
amongst us and fills the fawners and blindly trendy with orgasmic adulation and
adoration.
Case in point is Emilio Pucci! The brand went through a metamorphosis
that ended with collections designed by Peter Dundas. Dundas, after several
less than successful collaborations, had apparently found his home and footing with the
brand and re imagined its DNA while carving out a new client base. So, in a case
of fixing what’s not broken they showed him the door and now Massimo Giorgetti
can link the brand to the” me too” generation of non-designers who have no clue
that clothes really have to sell and there is more to a brand than a show. How do
you go from sex kitten Euros to ... actually ... I can’t find the words to
describe what this is or who its target customer might be. What does come to
mind is that just because you have money, doesn’t mean you have taste and style
likewise with a design degree ... doesn’t mean you can design a collection for
a heritage brand.
Anyway, apparently the epidemic is spreading from NYC to
London to Milan and probably to Paris as well which means that pretty soon
women who love fashion will retreat to their closets or just stop buying
clothes. As has been said a jillion times here, fashion is about selling
clothes … full racks of fall clothes in November or of spring clothes in May
are not signs of success and hype doesn’t pay the bills.
P.S. the carwash skirts are surely not new and those shoes
... well, they gotta go .. done and done!
