Russian fashion & photography NYFW fall 2013

This past Wednesday evening I was fortunate enough to be invited to a reception at the Russian Consulate.  In cooperation with the Consulate General of the Russian federation and DEPESHA (Russian Lifestyle Magazine) presented the opening salvo in what will no doubt become something of great interest around the world and that would be F A S H I O N!

Stephan Rabimov, editor in chief of DEPESHA, assembled a tableau featuring some very unexpected new Russian designers.  As is the wont of so many of us, we have stereotypes fixed in our heads but on this occasion stereotypes were broken, if not smashed to smithereens.

The main event was made up of 8 designs which were all shown in black.  My take is that this was an amazing opportunity for exposure to the Western market as well as a way of debunking any preconceived notions of what Russian fashion might be like.  The selection ranged from the wondrously fantastical to the architectural to the very of the moment.  I must say that I was hungry to see more from each designer in order to frame a proper perspective of each’s body of work.

What also made this event quite spectacular was this was a celebration that included an immense smorgasbord of edible delights and full bar; all of it set within the elegant confines of the Russian Consulate.  I must say it brought me back to when shows were not so generic in NYC ad took place at far more interesting venues than white tents.

Bravo to Mr. Rabimov and to the Consulate for what can only be called a propitious beginning and one that will hopefully expand and recur again season after season.

PS.. the designers are Irina Shaposhnikova, Sergui Teplov, Aleksandr Khrisanfov, Tegin, BEssARION, Viva Vox, Dmitry Loginov ARSENICUM, Pirosmani by Jenya Malygina…… I also took the liberty of adding several images other than what was show that evening..before I forget.. there was a selection from several  rather talented photographers of which I have included some of their work as well
