After a spate of less than favorable reviews, it is my
pleasure to say BRAVO! The best part of that is simply that it is an initial
reaction to a collection by a designer who just gets it. He employs his
vocabulary in order to deliver a short but convincing and style appropriate
dialog on the subject of Resort 2015 by Giambattista Valli.
Mr. Valli is a designer who most definitely knows his
customers via his seasonal collections in ready to wear and haute couture. How
wonderful it is to see him “speak” or beckon his ladies thru his collections.
It is not to say he never strays but this collection is simply spot on. The
cutaway trapeze tops, the long lean pants, the superb embellishments, the
fabrics, the colors, the proportions and as always the impeccable make and
finish.
Resort, as I have stated time after time is not about trying
to set the newest trend, it is about selling clothes after Fall and before
Spring and perhaps it is a time to show off what you do best. It is the season
for those who travel, celebrate or for those who shop early. Mr. Valli
studiously avoids the wear now trend but I am somewhat disappointed there was
not more “holiday” dressing.
Having seen a capsule collection that was done for Dover
Street Market, I am more than ever a fan of Mr. Valli as he is the stand out in
a sea of sameness and he sees the feminine side of fashion rather than the
bland asexual minimal me too side. Imagine, he does not strive to be Jil or Raf
or Nicholas, he has the ability to stand on his own and he speaks for himself.
When most designers are “lip synching” he is center stage belting out his solo
performance … the song is written by him!!
And PS... Jumpin Giamba!! Love the shoes! Love the bags! It
is so not about quantity but quality!! The hippie hair and make-up could have
been left behind but it didn’t really detract from the main event.
